‘리눅스 오토메이션’ 전략에는 통합 가상화 기능을 강화한 레드햇 엔터프라이즈 리눅스 5.1(RHEL 5.1)을 비롯해, ISV들에게 어플리케이션 및 서비스를 제공함에 있어 더욱 많은 선택권을 주는 어플라이언스 OS, 그리고 최근 아마존과의 제휴를 통해 필요할 때 언제든 레드햇의 리소스를 제공받을 수 있도록 하는 클라우드 컴퓨팅 지원 등이 포함되어 있다. 이로써 레드햇의 파트너들은 에코시스템을 통해 한 번의 인증으로 레드햇의 제품을 어디에든 자유롭게 적용할 수 있게 되었다.
통합 가상화 기능 강화 및 적용 가능 서버 크게 확장한 RHEL 5.1
올해 초 RHEL5 출시 이후 통합 가상화 기능을 강화하여 출시된 RHEL 5.1은 최신 오픈 소스 기술을 통해 투자대비효과를 최대화 하고 복잡한 컴퓨팅 환경을 사용자에게 최적화 시키는데 중점을 두어 일반 라이센스 가상화 소프트웨어보다 2배 이상의 성능을 발휘한다.
특히 기업의 규모나 코어의 개수에 구애 받지 않는 뛰어난 유연성을 제공해 x86, x86-64, 파워(POWER), 아이테니엄(Itanium), 메인프레임 서버 모두에서 구동 될 수 있으며, 윈도우 XP, 윈도우 서버 2000, 2003, 윈도우 2008 베타 게스트 등의 마이크로소프트 윈도우 가상화에 대한 지원도 강화한 것이 특징이다.
RHEL 5.1은 가상 서버 관리 전반에 정보를 제공하는 레드햇 네트워크 (Red Hat Network)를 통해 제공되며 사용자들은 RHEL 5.1의 가상화 기능을 이용해 사용 중인 어플리케이션들을 다른 서버에서도 무리 없이 사용할 수 있게 된다. 또한 미션 크리티컬 서버를 위한 레드햇 엔터프라이즈 리눅스 어드밴스드 플랫폼(Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Platform)은 가상 서버와 실제 서버 모두에 대해 고가용 클러스터링을 비롯해 스토리지 가상화, 페일오버(fail-over) 기능을 제공하므로 기업 사용자들은 각자의 비즈니스 용도에 맞도록 리소스를 최대한 활용 할 수 있게 된다.
특히 레드햇은 인텔과의 긴밀한 협업을 통해 인텔의 쿼드코어 제온 및 아이테니엄 탑재 서버에서 탁월한 가상화 기능을 발휘하며, 기존의 가상화의 일어날 수 있는 부작용으로 꼽혔던 과부하에 대한 문제를 해결하였다.
어플리케이션 공급에 유연성 제공한 레드햇 어플라이언스 OS
2008년 출시 예정인 레드햇 어플라이언스 OS (Red Hat Appliance Operating System)는 자사의 RHEL에서 구동되는 어플리케이션들이 VM웨어의 ESX, 마이크로소프트의 비리디언(Viridian)이 구동되고 있는 서버에서도 무리 없이 작동할 수 있도록 해 줌으로써, ISV들이 보다 자유롭게 어플리케이션을 공급할 수 있도록 해준다.
이와 함께 레드햇은 개발자들을 위한 ‘가상 어플라이언스 개발 킷 (Virtual Appliance Development Kit)’을 발표해 기존의 소프트웨어에 별도의 개발 비용을 들이지 않고 구동하고자 하는 운영체제에 자유롭게 적용될 수 있도록 할 예정이다.
온디맨드로 리소스 제공하는 클라우드 컴퓨팅 지원
최근 레드햇은 아마존과의 제휴를 통해 클라우드 컴퓨팅을 지원함으로써 사용자들이 ‘아마존 EC2(Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud)’ 에서 온디맨드로 레드햇의 리소스를 제공 받을 수 있도록 하였다. 클라우드 컴퓨팅은 프로그램이나 문서를 인터넷으로 접속할 수 있는 대형 컴퓨터에 저장하고 PC·휴대폰과 같은 각종 단말기로 원격에서 원하는 작업을 수행할 수 있는 사용 환경을 말한다.
이로써 개발자들은 아마존의 네트워크 인프라와 데이터센터를 활용해 레드햇 엔터프라이즈 리눅스에 최적화 된 애플리케이션을 개발하여 자유롭게 배치할 수 있게 된다.
레드햇코리아의 김근 지사장은 “통합 가상화 지원을 통해 레드햇은 고객들의 어플리케이션 적용에 더 많은 선택을 제공한다. 시스템의 규모 및 종류, 워크로드에 상관없이 인프라 활용도를 크게 높일 수 있어, 가장 높은 수준의 유연성을 제공하는 오픈 소스의 장점을 최대로 활용할 수 있다”고 말했다.
